Dating Tips and Advice from our Award Winning Matchmakers

Here’s why summer is the ultimate season to reset your dating game

After spending the colder months swiping on fatigue-inducing apps, sitting through awkward coffee dates in dim, crowded cafes, or braving rain showers for a low-effort walk in the park, even the most hopeful romantic can become demoralised. But thankfully as the summer arrives, there is a distinct shift in the air and according to global relationship expert and award-winning matchmaker Gillian McCallum, summer isn’t just a pleasant break in the weather; it is objectively and psychologically the best time of year to reinvigorate your search for love! By taking advantage of the natural high energy, lighter evenings, and social momentum of the sunnier months, you can kiss goodbye to dating burnout.

The science of summer: why our brains are wired for romance

It’s a scientific fact that dating feel so much easier when the sun is shining. During the darker winter months, many of us suffer from subtle shifts in mood, driven by lowered vitamin D levels and an overproduction of melatonin, the hormone that makes us feel sleepy and lethargic. When summer arrives, however, increased exposure to natural sunlight triggers a powerful release of serotonin—the body’s natural “happy” chemical—alongside a welcome boost in dopamine.

This biological reset does wonders and reinvigorates us, giving us

  • A confidence boost: Everyone agrees that confidence is universally magnetic when meeting someone new. Sunlight elevates our mood, making us feel naturally more vibrant, optimistic, and self-assured.
  • Higher energy levels: Longer daylight hours naturally suppress melatonin, giving us more physical and social energy after a busy workday to head out on dates.
  • Openness to novelty: The warm weather lowers our stress hormones, making us far more receptive to spontaneous interactions, meeting new people, and trying fresh experiences.

Swiping fatigue versus summer spontaneity

One of the biggest hurdles those currently navigating the dating landscape is “app exhaustion” and time spent messaging on apps sadly rarely translate into real-world chemistry. Thankfully, summer provides the perfect antidote to this, with warmer weather shifting social life back outdoors.

In summer, public life expands. Rooftop bars, outdoor food markets, park picnics, beach walks, and music festivals create lower-pressure environments, where natural, real-life connections can thrive. Remember when people are relaxed, moving outdoors, and having fun, they drop their defensive walls far faster than they do during formal indoor dates. This allows genuine chemistry and compatibility to surface effortlessly.

I have four pieces of advice that will maximise your chance of finding love this summer.

1. Trade “interrogations” for low-stakes outdoor activities: Ditch the standard indoor dinner or drink setups and instead, lean into the casual nature of the season. Plan dates around an evening walk through a botanical garden, a game of mini golf, a beach stroll, or a visit to an open-air food market. Active, open-air dates reduce awkward silences and give you both something shared to focus on.

2: Embrace “The Season”: Take a temporary hiatus from dating apps and instead head to social events such as Wimbledon, Ascot and The Henley Regatta. In the 1700s, the high-society “marriage mart” featured in programmes such as Bridgerton, took place squarely in the summer season. It was centred precisely around these high-profile outdoor events!

3. Enjoy the lighter, brighter days: Instead of rushing home after work to collapse on the couch, capitalize on mid-week post-work hours. A 6:00 PM walk or a quick sunset drink feels far less demanding on a warm July evening than it does in November, allowing you to fit meaningful dates seamlessly into your routine without feeling drained.

4. Remember the rules: There are two non-negotiable rules I share with all my clients to help nudge them towards success in finding love. First, the initial dates – ideally the first five – should never exceed 90 minutes. In many ways, the better they are going, the more you should stick to this almost magical timeframe. Leave your date with a sense of anticipation and excitement, leave them wanting more. Also, when you are on a date, never sit directly across from your potential amour. For people who are highly successful at work, and possibly don’t date often, it can feel like a job interview. That is the last way you want your potential love interest to feel. Instead, pick a venue where you can sit side-by-side at a bar, or find a cute corner where you can sit next to one another and view the rest of the room.  Sitting closely allows you to break the physical barrier naturally with a light, comfortable touch on the arm if you would like to show your attraction.

Summer offers a unique window of opportunity for daters so keep going, the right person is out there waiting for you. So, step outside, embrace the serotonin, and let the summer season work its magic.

When you align your dating goals with the natural energy, sunshine, and optimism of the season, finding love no longer feels like an exhausting chore—it becomes an exciting adventure. Take a deep breath, step out into the sunshine, and give your love life the seasonal reset it deserves.
