What does Valentine’s Day mean to you?

Cheesy valentines

Keeping it simple

Today is that day of the year that gives high hopes for some people and pure commercial terror for others!  The concept of Valentine’s Day originates from early Christian martyrology associated with Saint Valentine who was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians who were persecuted under the Roman Empire; during his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. Legend states that before his execution he wrote “from your Valentine” as a farewell to her. He sounds like he was an honourable man!

Today Valentine’s Day benefits those in retail and catering very well indeed..  so, where does love come in? With 365 days in the year, surely there is more than one day when one should declare their love and/or affection to their partner?

Maybe Valentine’s Day serves a better purpose, and perhaps more exciting one, for people who’ve only just met – a fun and flirtatious day to show each other a little bit of adoration. For those couples in a long-term relationship, is it best to keep it simple? Personally I’d prefer a kiss and cuddle over a home cooked meal any day of the week over a lavish slap-up meal once a year!

Whatever you decide to do today, if it goes all ‘Pete Tong’ you may want to tune in to watch Mary Balfour advising women about ‘what men REALLY want’ on the Chrissy B show, 15th February at 9.30pm. Full details below.

Happy Valentine’s..!
