‘Tis the season for some festive frivolity, which might mean you are looking for some Christmas-themed dates over the next few weeks. You know, something to get you and your date into the holiday spirit and help you benefit from the romance that is already in the air at this time of year.
Fortunately, as ever, there is plenty going on in London to fit almost any festive fancy you might have. So, all you need now is the company of someone you fancy, a warm outfit and a date idea from our extensive list.
1. Christmas tree maze
The Southbank Centre is hosting a Winter Festival throughout the holiday season. As part of that festival, its Hungerford Bridge Car Park has been turned into a Christmas tree maze.
The maze is made from 300 Black Forest Christmas trees. The Southbank Centre promises a prize for children who make it to the middle of the maze, but we reckon it would make a nice romantic stroll, too, especially if you choose to combine it with one of the other events being held as part of the Winter Festival.
2. Ice skating
You don’t need to have watched too many Hollywood Christmas films to know that ice skating is a good go-to romantic Christmas date. Just make sure your sense of balance is up to the job before suggesting this one! There are a few options around London, such as the Natural History Museum, Canary Wharf, Westfield and the stylish Somerset House.
If you’re willing to go the extra mile in the name of Christmas romance, you could head out of central London to Hampton Court Palace for a quieter rink in regal surrounds.
3. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland
The Winter Winderland in Hyde Park has become a regular Christmas attaction in recent years. Granted, you’re not likely to get the place to yourself, but maybe the crowds will add to the sense of a communal Christmas spirit. Attractions at the Winter Wonderland include an ice rink, a Magic Ice Kingdom and a Christmas market.
There are also plenty of stalls offering food and drink.
4. Christmas markets
Following on from the Christmas market at the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, a wander around a Christmas market is a great festive date idea. There are lots to choose from throughout the city, but a couple worth considering are the ones at the Tate Modern and Barbican.
The Barbican promises 35 independent designers, makers and artisans in its foyers, plus plenty of mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies. The market at Tate Modern is a traditional German Christmas market, featuring up to 70 wooden chalets.
5. Christmas carol concert
As we said, a bit of a crowd and a sense of community can add to the Christmasy atmosphere. Nowhere is that more true than at carol concert. Listening to some familiar festive tunes, admiring some quality musicianship and maybe even having a bit of a singsong should get you feeling festive.
Again, there is plenty of choice throughout London but there is a packed programme at St Martin-in-the-Fields, near Trafalgar Square.
