Fortunately, as ever, there is plenty going on in London to fit almost any festive fancy you might have. So, all you need now is the company of someone you fancy, a warm outfit and a date idea from our extensive list.

1. Winter Light 2023/24

The Southbank Centre this festive period are putting on spellbinding shows, glorious music and choirs, luminous art, festive family fun and our wondrous Winter Market and pop-ups.

Over the dark winter nights, the Southbank is illuminated by outdoor artworks that play with light and colour.

Winter light features various artists uses light and colour in playful ways, at the same time exploring topics at the forefront of society, such as individual and collective identity, the environment and technology.

Find them as you wander, or consult our map to find them. The best time to visit, it goes without saying, is after dark, but you can see them whenever we’re open

2. Ice skating

You don’t need to have watched too many Hollywood Christmas films to know that ice skating is a good go-to romantic Christmas date. Just make sure your sense of balance is up to the job before suggesting this one! There are a few options around London, such as the Natural History Museum, Canary Wharf, Westfield and the stylish Somerset House.

If you’re willing to go the extra mile in the name of Christmas romance, you could head out of central London to Hampton Court Palace for a quieter rink in regal surrounds.

3. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

The Winter Winderland in Hyde Park has become a regular Christmas attaction in recent years. Granted, you’re not likely to get the place to yourself, but maybe the crowds will add to the sense of a communal Christmas spirit. Attractions at the Winter Wonderland include an ice rink, a Magic Ice Kingdom and a Christmas market.

There are also plenty of stalls offering food and drink.

4. Christmas markets

Following on from the Christmas market at the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, a wander around a Christmas market is a great festive date idea. There are lots to choose from throughout the city, but a couple worth considering are the ones at the Southbank Winter Market and Christmas by the River at London Bridge City.

Pick up the perfect Christmas gifts for loved ones and enjoy street food, twinkling lights and entertainment throughout the festive season at some of London’s most popular Christmas markets.

5. Christmas carol concert

As we said, a bit of a crowd and a sense of community can add to the Christmasy atmosphere. Nowhere is that more true than at carol concert. Listening to some familiar festive tunes, admiring some quality musicianship and maybe even having a bit of a singsong should get you feeling festive.

Again, there is plenty of choice throughout London but there is a packed programme at St Martin-in-the-Fields, near Trafalgar Square.
